CAN I SWIM WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS

It’s the question of the summer for anyone wearing Hair Extensions because July is here, and we are in PEAK summer season. I blinked, and June flew by with its full weeks and even busier weekends. And just as fast as June ends, the 4th of July holiday weekend is in our lap like a hot potato. So, I hope you snagged an extra day off of work and are planning to use it to the fullest.

One of the top questions about hair extensions is: Can I go swimming with hair extensions? So let’s dive in. It’s no secret that every summer we all hit the water to cool off. Whether that’s pools, lakes, rivers, or the ocean, if you’re anything like me, you want to be able to truly enjoy the moment and not worry about if your hair gets wet.

(For those who prefer not to get their hair wet, a big ol’ ballet bun on top of your head with sunglasses is a great option - it’s giving poolside & floaty vibes!)

Here at Rose Golde Beauty we live life to the fullest, so we like to have the option to do whatever the moment calls for with our hair. Up, down, wet, dry, curly, wavy, straight… all of it. So it’s now question that those with an active lifestyle wearing extensions are need the HOW TO on swimming with Hand Tied Hair Extensions.

This advice applies not just to hand-tied hair extensions but also to anyone with long hair or color treated hair. The key is to fill the hair with a protective layer first, reducing the amount of saltwater and chlorine the hair will absorb. Both saltwater and chlorine can turn hair green and dry out the ends to the point they're crispy tenders! So these tips can be used by anyone wanting to protect the health of their hair this summer!

How to Prepare Your Hair Extensions for Swimming:

Brush and Detangle Hair: Ensure your hair is free of knots and tangles.

Wet Hair with Fresh, Clean Water: This step saturates your hair so it absorbs less chlorine or saltwater.

Apply a Leave-In Product: Use a detangler, serum, or lightweight conditioner depending on your hair type that offers UV protection. I always bring my Iles Formula travel trio with me – it's all I ever need.

Put Hair in Secure Braids: This helps keep your hair manageable and reduces tangling while swimming.

After Swimming Care:

When you get home and are ready to shower off the day, follow these steps:

Undo Braids and Finger Comb Hair: Gently work through any tangles with your fingers.

Use a Wide-Tooth Comb: Smooth out your hair starting at the ends.

Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse out the leave-in product and any chlorine or saltwater from your hair.

Shampoo and Condition: Shampoo your scalp and work the lather through the ends. Deep condition your hair, rinse, and apply a light conditioner to the ends. Rinse thoroughly again.

Since it's summer, I like to wrap my hair in a towel for 20 minutes while I do my after-sun skincare. Then, I'll let it down and run some leave-in product through it. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, and air-dry all day. You only need to blow-dry the base of the wefts at night to remove any lingering moisture before you're out and on to the next adventure!
